In the last newsletter I wrote that the orphanage did not lie to the parents. Many of you took offense to that statement. I always find our reactive natures much more interesting than the subject we are reacting too. After you read that line about the orphanage not lying to the parents, did you notice if that caused a stir for you? I'm curious. Perhaps it didn't perhaps it did, I just wonder if you noticed it. Mindfulness is very important.
Now why did I say that the orphanage didn’t lie? Because it is to the best of my knowledge true. How many orphanages are educated on brain development? How many orphanages are educated on the impact of stress and trauma on a child's development? How many orphanages are experienced in the behaviors demonstrated by children who have experienced trauma? Yes, that's right not very many. The orphanage system is no different than our own adoption or foster care system when it comes to truly being able to communicate authentic understanding about children and the manner in which their past experiences have impacted them and continues to disrupt their brain/body system. You can't honestly lie about something of which you have no knowledge. Should they be educated? Well heaven's sake yes they should, but so should our own adoption and foster care system! Before we get up in arms and start casting stones, let us reflect and be mindful of the challenges of our own backyards!
Education is the key. In my opinion every adoption agency, foster care agency, and orphanage would make leaps in their understanding if they would only read two books: Dr. Bruce Perry's The Boy Who Was Raised As a Dog and my From Fear to Love: Parenting Difficult Adopted Children. Just those two books and a little studying and processing of the information could create an enormous shift in the adoption/foster care/orphanage system.
Anybody want to make a donation to make this possible?
Until next time...
